Using the GLAD exercise program in Vancouver

The GLAD exercise program is an evidence based approach to managing and improving patients function with knee and hip OA.

The GLAD program was designed in Denmark and is now a publicly funded program within the Danish healthcare system. In Canada we foot the bill for extremely expensive surgeries but sadly exercise programs are still only available to privately paying consumers.

Our understanding of OA has transformed in the past decade and so has our management. Gone are the days of limiting activity and getting on a waitlist for surgery. Without getting ahead of myself surgery is still necessary in some cases but we can greatly reduce the number of surgeries and improve the success rate of those who do if we go through with the procedure by improving the health of our patients. Please don't think of OA as an injury. It is a sensitization of an area often due to a confluence of factors which can increase the inflammation and thus the pain and SENSITIVITY in the area. Some structure hasn't suddenly broken or worn away.

I can offer a small group classes (which can have a huge positive impact) or 1 on 1 services. I shoot for a 6-10 week exercise and education program. The program starts with understanding the condition. I offer in person education as well as online resources. From there we assess your current function and determine what your end goal will be. Next we build a program for home and in person that builds progressively towards your goal. I use phone call as well as in person session to ensure accountablity and to make necessary changes.

I have been in absoultely awe at the body's ability to adapt under stress. It takes a good effort but the benefits can be huge - less pain, less surgery, and more function. Its worth a shot!
